John Hermon Steele
1920 - 2006

Our loving husband. father. and grandfather. John Hermon Steele passed away peacefully at home surrounded by is family, December 15, 2006 following his 96th birthday.

John was born November 30, 1910 in Delta, Utah to John Edward and Zephyr Deuel Steele. On January 1, 1935 he was sealed to Marye Hanegan in the Logan Temple. After her death. he married Ruby Erskine in 1983.

John graduated from Delta High School in 1929. where he was prominent in football, basketball, track, musicals and drama. At the Utah State Agricultural College, he played freshman football, excelled in boxing and paid his tuition by working in the campus cafeteria. He graduated in 1935 with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering. John was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. and was assigned to the investigations and construction of the Provo River project. He transferred to the Bureaus regional office in Salt Lake City in 1944 as Regional Hydrologist. He then served or two years as the chief engineer for the Upper Colorado River Commission. He retired from federal service with the Bureau June 1, 1971. Prior to his retirement. he Performed a foreign tour to the Phillipines. Taiwan, and Peru where he helped those countries develop land. water. and power resources. He also worked as a consultant and conducted the first water study for the country of Yamen.

John was active in the LDS Church and held many leadership positions including Elders Quorum President, Counselor in Bishopric, Stake High Councilor, High Priest Group Leader and as an officiator for 13 years in the Salt Lake Temple. John and Ruby served three missions in Nauvoo, lllinois. He will be remembered for the Valley View Stake track meets he organized for the young men in the 1960s.

John is survived by his wife. Ruby; five children. Patricia Culverwell (Ronald), John Michael Steele, Margaret Wheelwright (Steven}, Diane Austin (DeMeade), Richard H. Steele; two stepchildren. Scott Erskine (Denise) and Diane Derr {Lanny); 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; three sisters. and his wife. Marye.

Funeral services will be held Friday. December 22. 2006, 11 a.m. at the Holladay South Stake Center, 4917 S. Viewmont Street (2085 East), Holladay, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday evening. December 21st from 6-8 pm; at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. 401 S. Highland Drive.
